Justin D. Park
The best thing about being a lawyer, according to Justin, “is the honest appreciation that is evident in a client’s face and voice when you can offer them some finality to their legal disputes.” It is this need, so evident in the lives of clients, be they individuals or businesses, that drives Justin to be the attorney that he has become.
Justin’s interest in the law sprang mostly from his involvement in his family’s business – electrical contracting. In that business, as is often the case in a family business, he filled every role imaginable, including working as an apprentice electrician, reviewing plans and specs to create bids, negotiating contracts with clients, and even reviewing financial issues and assisting in creating a business plan. In that business endeavor, Justin witnessed first hand the legal issues faced by contractors, large and small business owners, and individual holders of real estate for both residential and commercial purposes. He sat in on governmental hearings, met with business owners and real estate developers, and developed relationships with vendors and complimentary businesses. All these experiences convinced him that every business needs sound, practical legal advice that is tailored to the individual client’s best interests, and not the interests of greed.
Following a 2-year volunteer mission in Japan, his experiences drove Justin to complete his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University in International Relations, and then go on to obtain his law degree from Seattle University School of Law in 1998. At Seattle U., Justin excelled in trial advocacy training, winning competitions and being named to the Order of Barristers, an award given to the top ten students in each class in trial advocacy.
Since obtaining his degree from Seattle U., Justin has represented clients on issues that face businesses and individuals such as:
- Construction
- Intellectual Property
- Real Estate
- Investment/Investor Issues
- Government Relations/Land Use
- Contracts
- Business Disparagement
- Employment
Justin has been able to assist his clients in resolving hundreds of issues, including the following examples:
- Represented the largest condominium association in the State of Washington in various claims including disputes with roofing and other contractors regarding quality of work.
- Represented a business client in an action against client’s insurance company. Negotiated a six-figure settlement in the client’s favor for lost personal property that was disposed of by client’s landlord.
- Represented a company in the tourism industry against allegations of copyright infringement. Negotiated a settlement involving the client’s insurance company that resulted in no out-of-pocket costs to the client.
- Represented an individual in a case regarding damages and interest flowing from failure to pay on a promissory note secured by a deed of trust. Client appealed the court’s decision to award only a small amount of attorney fees. Appellate court agreed with Justin’s arguments and the case was returned to the trial court, where the client was awarded his full attorney fees. See Mehlenbacher v. DeMont, 103 Wash.App. 240, 11 P.3d 871 (2000).
- Represented a couple who had a dispute with their homeowner’s association regarding their ability to build their dream home. Jury returned a verdict in favor of the homeowners and court awarded them their attorney’s fees. The Washington State Court of Appeals rejected the association’s appeal, establishing important law governing association behavior. Appellate Court decision in favor of Justin’s client was published as Day v. Santorsola, 118 Wash.App. 746, 76 P.3d 1190 (2003).
Justin has tried cases to juries and judges, argued in front of different appellate panels, handled administrative hearings at all levels, and participated in numerous mediations and arbitrations. He began his career at McFerran & Helsdon in Tacoma, joining Romero Montague in 2002 and becoming a partner at Romero Park & Wiggins in 2005.
Justin is admitted to practice in both Washington and Utah, before both the state and federal courts. He has been admitted pro hac vice in Massachusetts, New Mexico, Texas, and California, and has handled matters in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, California, Texas, Michigan, Florida, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Colorado, and of course Washington.
Justin and his wife, Jana, make their home in Issaquah, and have four children. They are involved in their local church and schools. Justin has been involved with Safe Streets, Boy Scouts of America, the YMCA and other organizations, as well as being active at his children’s school and in the PTA. He speaks Japanese, loves basketball and most sports, and enjoys hobbies like singing in a barbershop quartet as well as reading, movies, and spending time with his family.
